Updated: Nov 4, 2020

Authors: Sune Gudiksen and Jake Inlove

Title: Gamification for Business -

Why innovators and changemakers use games to break down silos, drive engagement and build trust

Details: Kogan Pages, 2018, 295 pages

I got this book from Kogan Pages last summer. I have to say, this is a good one if you want to know more about gamification, how individuals learn, and how to overcome some organisational challenges with gamification.

As detailed in the book, ‘this book is an enthusiastic celebration of playful learning through games. For too long, ‘fun’ has been devalued and continues to be squeezed out of our formal educational institutions and organisations under the misguided view that play is immaterial to learning.’

This is a great book, which is covering elements of gamification in the business environment. There are different business game approaches detailed in the book from various parts of Europe, for example, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, the UK, and Germany. The authors talk about the new Nordic management movement, which invites organisational actors, including leaders, partners, employees, customers, and other stakeholders, to engage in action-oriented, through-provoking dialogue.

The book is broken into 3 parts;

Part 1 talks about the seven organisational challenges that seem to influence all organisational structures, cultures, and activities. It provides arguments for why game approaches can be an effective method to overcome these challenges.

Part 2 provides a good list of games that are currently used to deal with organisational challenges in the industry.

Part 3 covers models and frameworks to better understand the core elements in the business game applications.

What I like about the book:

The book is easy to read, based on research so if you want to know more about the referenced materials, you can research further. I also like the idea that the book covers different countries and approaches, giving the reader a rounded picture of the topic. The price of the book was fair as well. I got the online version so I can access the content via the Bookshelf app anywhere.
